A career across ideas and institutions

Research with
a public life.

The relationship between Iceland and Europe runs through Bergmann’s career, from his early work in European affairs to recent comparative research on populism.

He completed a master’s degree in international politics at the University of Copenhagen in 1998 and a PhD in political science at the University of Iceland in 2009. His doctoral research examined national sentiment and Iceland’s European policy.

He joined Bifröst University in 2005 and became Professor of Politics in 2012. Alongside his university work, he has participated in international research networks and contributed analysis to Icelandic and international media.

In 2011 he served on Iceland’s Constitutional Council. His research on democratic participation includes comparative writing on the Icelandic and Irish constitutional processes.

Beyond political science, he writes in Icelandic. His literary work includes the novels Glapræði, Hryðjuverkamaður snýr heim and Samsærið, and the 2024 memoir Óvæntur ferðafélagi.
